CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY CELEBRITY CENTRE INTERNATIONAL HOSTS FORUM ON HUMAN TRAFFICKING

The Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre International hosted a forum and fundraiser March 31 to increase awareness of human trafficking and its consequences in Southern California. Funds raised will go to support human rights education.

Virginia Isaias, whose Foundation of Survivors of Human Trafficking (Fundacion de Sobrevivientes de Trafico Humano) is a resource center to help those who have escaped or been rescued from slavery, urged survivors to speak up to raise awareness of the plight of trafficking victims.

Youth for Human Rights volunteer Cristal Logothetis, who organized the forum, explained why she became involved with this issue.

“A few months ago, I was shocked to learn the International Labor Organization estimates as many as 27 million individuals are enslaved today and according to the U.S. State Department Trafficking in Persons Report, every year 600,000 to 800,000 persons are trafficked across international borders.”

The U.S. State Department also estimates 14,500 to 17,500 individuals, primarily women and children, are trafficked to the United States annually. Last week, The New York Timesreported an estimated 100,000 to 300,000 American-born children are sold for sex each year. In its October 2007 Final Report, the California Alliance to Combat Trafficking and Slavery Task Force noted that California is a top destination for human traffickers.

According to Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna who hosted the National Association of Attorney Generals (NAAG) human trafficking summit in Seattle, Washington, March 28-30, 2012, human trafficking is a $32 billion global industry.

At the March 31 forum, Tracie Parker, Human Rights Youth Coordinator of the Church of Scientology International, highlighted the importance of human rights education in fighting human trafficking: “Most people think this is only a problem in third-world countries, but it is happening right here. Raising awareness is vital. Tips to authorities from private citizens are a prime means of locating and freeing victims and apprehending traffickers.”

The Church of Scientology sponsors one of the world’s largest nongovernmental human rights information campaigns, aimed at raising awareness and calling for governments to meaningfully support and ensure respect for human rights.

Los Topos and the Scientology Volunteer Ministers of Mexico Provide Disaster Response Training

Los Topos, the famous search and rescue group of Mexico, and Volunteer Ministers Armando García and Dr. Sandra Ramirez are holding series of seminars in first aid and Volunteer Minister disaster response techniques at the Church of Scientology of Mexico, Balderas No. 27, Centro Historico, Del Cuautémoc, Mexico D.F.

“Los Topos” means the moles—the name given to the group by their fans for their heroic feats, burrowing under collapsed buildings to pull survivors out of the rubble. Their official title, Tecnicos en Urgencias Medicas, Seguridad y Rescate 19 de Septembre (Emergency Medical Technicians, Security and Rescue of September 19), comes from their work on that date om 1985 when a magnitude 8.1 earthquake killed some 9,500 and left 100,000 homeless in the Mexican state of Michoacan.

Los Topos and the Volunteer Ministers joined forces in Haiti after the January 2010 earthquake, and have worked together this year in Christchurch, New Zealand and Northeastern Japan after the devastating earthquakes in those regions. The Los Topos staff are trained in Scientology Volunteer Minister technology and use it liberally in their work.

Notwithstanding this century’s array of technological wonders—in medicine, transportation, nuclear energy and electronic communications—we live in a seriously troubled society. Under the triple onslaught of drug abuse, criminality and declining morals, much of this world has truly become a wasteland. By some estimates, marijuana, for example, has become the largest cash crop in America, while illegal drugs gross estimated annual revenues of some $500 billion. Added to these figures are another $712 billion spent on medical and psychiatric drugs—until, at last, we are faced with a crisis of truly planetary proportions wherein the people of Earth spend more money on drugs than most nations produce in terms of goods and services.

Yet ill-gotten revenue is only one measure of today’s drug abuse toll. The link with crime is another. According to United States Justice Department studies, half of all those arrested for violent crimes test positive for illegal drugs, which in turn translates into 1.4 million acts of violence a year...and the cost of that in terms of human misery is incalculable.

At the arguable bottom of both drug abuse and criminality, lies what has been termed “a post-modern moral crisis.” Here, too, the facts are disturbing: More than 40 percent of all marriages end in divorce, another 40 percent of all American youth readily admit they lie for financial gain and still another 64 percent admit to cheating on exams. The picture grows grimmer still in light of cyberspace iniquity. To wit: 25 percent of all Web searches are pornographic and 60 percent of all software is pirated. It is not surprising then, that as rates of burglary, embezzlement and all other forms of larceny have finally reached epidemic proportions, some 76 percent of all Americans came to describe this era as the “Age of Moral and Spiritual Decline.”

Sensing where this world was headed as early as 1950, L. Ron Hubbard began to search out a means by which, as he wrote, one might “recover to himself some of the happiness, some of the sincerity and some of the love and kindness with which he was created.”

New Scientology HQ for Haiti Disaster Relief

The Scientology Volunteer Ministers opened a center outside Port-au-Prince to act a headquarters for their activities on the island and for training new volunteers.

The Scientology Volunteer Ministers program was developed in 1976 by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard. In the wake of 9/11, David Miscavige greatly expanded the scope of the program, which now includes Goodwill Tours throughout the world.

Church of Scientology International Honors Haiti Volunteers

Marking National Volunteer Week, Scientology Church praises 1,000 volunteers for more than 150,000 hours in Haiti relief effort

The Church of Scientology International, mother church of the Scientology religion, today acknowledged 1,000 volunteers who have served in Haiti since the January 12, 2010, earthquake.

The Rev. Robert Adams of the Los Angeles-based Church of Scientology International presented a special Letter of Commendation to Scientology Volunteer Ministers International director Maria Reyher, citing the life-saving actions of all the volunteers who were sponsored by the Church to travel to Haiti.

New Los Angeles Scientology Church there for the community

At the grand opening of the Church of Scientology of Los Angeles this weekend it was really clear the Church is there for the community.

Karen Bass, Speaker Emeritus of the California State Assembly referred to the work Scientology does to ensure the human rights of everyone through exposing human rights abuses and programs to educate people on what human rights really are. She said "The Church of Scientology I know has made a difference, because your Creed is a universal creed and one that speaks to all people everywhere.”

It was great to hear what Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca had to say: “You have been consistently reliable in helping me to achieve my goal for a safer Los Angeles County. In particular, your drug education means everything to the safety of our schools and neighborhoods. That is why we trained a corps of our own deputies in the use of your unbeatable program, so I want to thank each and every one of you for everything you do in helping me do my job—because today, crime in Los Angeles is at its lowest in 40 years.”

But what I loved most was the speech by David Miscavige. It is always inspiring to hear what he has to say, and you can see his level of professionalism and his vision in every aspect of this beautiful new Scientology church.

Church of Scientology Recognizes Five Groups for National Volunteer Week

Tampa Bay, Florida - April 21, 2010 - In keeping with this year’s theme for National Volunteer Week of “Celebrating People in Action”, on Friday, April 23^rd at the historic Fort Harrison in downtown Clearwater, the Church of Scientology will recognize five groups in Florida who collectively have provided millions of hours in volunteer time since the beginning of 2010 – a period of time which has seen major natural disaster as well as economic upheaval affecting the lives of millions of people just in this region of the world alone. The groups which will be recognized are: Project Medishare of the University of Miami Hospital, Feeding America Tampa Bay, Disaster Management of United Way Tampa Bay, the United Relief Force Foundation and the Willa Carson Health Resource Center. The Church of Scientology recognizes the dedicated actions of the volunteers from these groups who have committed themselves to senseless acts of kindness resulting in over 1,000,000 hours of donated time in the first 4 months of 2010 alone, millions of dollars in donations and hundreds of thousands of people helped in Haiti, Florida, Tampa Bay and Clearwater.

“We have had the privilege of working with these dynamic groups and want them to know that their work is important to the stability and development of our communities,” said Pat Harney, the Public Affairs Director of the Church of Scientology, Flag Service Organization. “We chose these organizations because we have seen their work close up and know how much they mean to Clearwater, Tampa Bay and beyond.” According to Harney, the event is inspired by the founder of the Scientology religious philosophy Mr. Hubbard, who once wrote, “A being is only as valuable as he can serve others.”

WHO WILL BE RECOGNIZED:

1. Project Medishare of the University of Miami Hospital, the group that organized, built and manned the largest field hospital in history on the airport grounds of Port-au-Prince, Haiti following the massive earthquake disaster there.

2. Feeding America Tampa Bay; formerly known as America’s Second Harvest of Tampa Bay was founded in 1982, is a food bank servicing 35,000 hungry people from 10 counties of Tampa Bay with some 10 million meals. In a single week, they provide over 50,000 meals.

3. Hands on Tampa Bay, United Way Tampa Bay, has 3,500 volunteers who have delivered 22,819 hours of service, the equivalent of nearly 11 years of work for the community.

4. The United Relief Force Foundation was initiated in February 2007 in Orlando by a group of college students dedicated to improving the lives of people who need humanitarian aid, emergency response and disaster relief to countries that have experienced natural and man-made disasters. Recently, several of their members dedicated themselves to the problems of the February 12^th earthquake in Haiti, joining forces with the Scientology Volunteer Ministers to reach out and assist the citizens there.

5. Willa Carson Health Resource Center is a non-profit, volunteer organization that provides free basic health care services to the citizens the neighborhood of Greenwood in Clearwater, Florida.

WHAT IS THE NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK

National Volunteer Week was signed into executive order by President Richard Nixon on April 20^th, 1974 declaring the third week in April be dedicated to those who give their time to charity. Since then all the US presidents who have followed have called upon Americans to volunteer service to others and to raise awareness to the importance of volunteering during this week. In 1990, the Points of Light Foundation now called the Points of Light Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the number of people and resources in volunteering so as to help solve serious social problems, adopted the sponsorship of the National Volunteer Week, and is promoting efforts for this week, which falls on April 18^th to 24^th this year.

Do you trust the government?

A survey by the Pew Research Center shows that if you trust your government representatives you are in the minority:

According to Market Watch, Pew found. Favorable ratings for the Democratic Party have fallen by 21 points over the past year (from 59% to 38%) and are at their lowest point in Pew Research surveys. Meanwhile, the Republican Party’s ratings have fallen back to 37%. They’d previously increased, from 40% last August to 46% in February.

Seems this is all over whether you can trust politicians. And that all boils down to ethics in the end. Ethics is not just a problem for politicians. Look at what is going on with Goldman Sachs. What happens when a person is weak on their personal ethics and they come under the pressure that politicians and people on positions of power in other sectors of society? Exactly what has been happening.

There is a chapter in the Scientology Handbook on Integrity and Honesty. If we don't do something to raise the ethical standards of our society, we will continue to have the kind of trouble we are experiencing today.
